It was during the Qing Dynasty that China became fully exposed to the new world order. While the Qing Government did take measures to help China meet the challenges of the new industrial world, its attempts were not particularly successful. The Chinese Diaspora in the 19th Century took place against this background. Professor Helen Dunstan of the University of Sydney, whose research interests include economic policy in the mid-Qing Dynasty, will take you through the rise and fall of China's last ruling dynasty and its historical consequences.
